Tour Plan
Day 1 is a full driving day from Fes to the edge of the Sahara, with the landscape changing from cedar-covered hills to palm oases along the way. We collect you from your hotel in Fes after breakfast.
Ifrane and the cedar forest:
The first stop is Ifrane, a Middle Atlas town whose cool climate and alpine-style houses earned it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco". Just outside town, the cedar forest is home to wild Barbary macaques, and we stop there so you can see them.
Midelt and the Ziz Valley:
Lunch is in Midelt, in the Middle Atlas. In the afternoon the road drops into the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and Berber villages, and we pull over at the best viewpoints for photos.
Erfoud and arrival in Merzouga:
The last town before the dunes is Erfoud, known for its fossils. In Merzouga you are welcomed with mint tea, then check into a riad close to the dunes for dinner and the night.
Day 2 is spent entirely around Merzouga, so there is no long drive today. After breakfast at the riad we go to Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa music, to hear the musicians play.
A visit to a nomad family:
Next, a nomadic family invites you in for mint tea and a chance to see how they live in the desert. Lunch is Berber pizza, a local flatbread stuffed and baked in the oven.
Camel ride into Erg Chebbi:
Back in Merzouga, you mount your camel in the late afternoon and ride out into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed so you watch the sun set over the sand.
Night in the desert camp:
Dinner is a Berber meal served at camp, followed by an evening around the campfire under the stars. You sleep in a nomad-style tent in the dunes.
Get up early on day 3 to watch the sunrise light up Erg Chebbi, then have breakfast at the camp before leaving the desert behind.
Todra Gorge:
The drive west brings you to the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon cut by the Todra River with rock walls up to 300 metres high. You walk along the river at the bottom of the gorge, a spot also popular with hikers and climbers.
Dades Valley:
In the afternoon we reach the Dades Valley, with its high cliffs, old kasbahs and the rounded rock formations known as "Monkey Fingers". You spend the night in the Dades Valley.
The last day takes you from the Dades Valley over the High Atlas to Marrakech, with several stops on the way. After breakfast, the first is Kalaat M'Gouna, the town of roses.
Kalaat M'Gouna rose cooperative:
If you like, you can visit a rose cooperative and see how rose water is distilled in the traditional way. You can buy rose water there if you want to take some home.
Skoura oasis:
In Skoura, palm groves follow the river through dry country, and we visit one of the oasis's historic kasbahs.
Ouarzazate:
Ouarzazate is called the "Hollywood of Morocco" because of the films shot in the area. We stop near Taourirt Kasbah and visit one of the town's film studios.
Ait Ben Haddou:
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village from the 17th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk its narrow lanes and climb to the top for views over the valley.
Over the High Atlas to Marrakech:
After lunch the road climbs over the High Atlas, with viewpoints along the way, and comes down into Marrakech, where we drop you at your hotel.
