Tour Plan
The first day of our 3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with pickup from your accommodation around 7:00-7:30 AM. We head southeast toward the High Atlas Mountains. The drive takes us through the Tizi n'Tichka pass, reaching an elevation of 2,260 meters. We make several stops for photos of mountain scenery and traditional Berber villages perched on hillsides.
Our first major stop is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We arrange time for you to explore this ancient fortified village with its distinctive red clay architecture. This iconic location has served as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and many other productions. You can climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape.
After lunch near the kasbah, we continue through Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Hollywood of Morocco" for its film studios. We then drive through the Rose Valley (especially beautiful in May) and into the Dades Valley. This region is known as the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" for the countless ancient fortified villages dotting the landscape. The valley features dramatic rock formations including the famous Monkey Fingers.
We arrive at your hotel in the Dades Gorges area in late afternoon. You'll have time to relax before a traditional Moroccan dinner at the hotel.
Driving time: Approximately 6-7 hours with stops
Distance: 320 km
Overnight: Dades Valley
After breakfast at your hotel, we drive toward the Todra Gorges. These dramatic canyons feature sheer vertical walls rising over 300 meters on both sides, narrowing to just 10 meters across in places. We give you time to walk through the gorge and take photos. The surrounding area has lush palm groves and Berber villages - a striking contrast to the canyon walls.
We continue through Tinghir and pass through Erfoud, famous for its fossils, before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. This is where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise dramatically from the flat desert - massive golden sand mountains visible from kilometers away.
At Merzouga, we meet your camels for the sunset trek into the Sahara Desert. The ride takes approximately 1.5 hours, with stops to photograph the dunes as the light changes them from yellow to orange to deep gold. We arrive at our desert camp just as the sun sets.
At camp, we serve mint tea followed by a traditional Berber dinner. After dinner, we gather around the campfire for traditional music performed by local musicians. The desert sky reveals thousands of stars - no light pollution here. You can sleep in your tent or outside under the stars.
Driving time: Approximately 5-6 hours with stops
Distance: 300 km
Overnight: Desert camp in Erg Chebbi dunes
We wake you early for sunrise over the dunes - watching the colors shift from purple to pink to gold makes the early start worthwhile. After breakfast at camp, we trek back on camels to Merzouga village. Back at the hotel, you can shower and refresh before the return journey.
We take a different route back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley. Our route passes through Rissani (the cradle of Morocco's ruling dynasty), then through Alnif and Tazarine. We enter the scenic Draa Valley with its endless palm groves and traditional mud-brick villages along Morocco's longest river.
We stop for lunch in Agdz before continuing to Ouarzazate. From there, we rejoin the main road to Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains once again via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The mountain scenery offers different perspectives on the return journey.
We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon/early evening around 7:00-8:00 PM, concluding your 3 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.
Driving time: Approximately 9-10 hours with stops
Distance: 450 km
Tour ends: Marrakech
