What you will see in Essaouira
Essaouira’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is smaller and calmer than the Marrakech medina, which makes it easy to explore on foot in a few hours. Walk the Skala de la Ville, the sea wall lined with old brass cannons, then head down to the harbor, where the blue fishing boats come in with the day’s catch. The souks sell crafts, jewelry and textiles, and there are plenty of places for lunch in the medina and by the harbor.
The long sandy beach runs south from the medina, with a promenade along it. Pack swimwear, sunscreen and a towel if you want time on the sand. Essaouira is also one of Morocco’s best-known surf towns: if you want to try a lesson, read our guide to surfing in Essaouira first.
On the road: argan trees and argan oil
The drive is part of the day. On the way to the coast you stop at the argan trees, where you may see goats climbing into the low branches to feed. The next stop is a women’s cooperative where argan oil is made from the kernels of the argan fruit. It is used both in cooking and as a skin and hair product, and you can see how it is produced.
Is an Essaouira day trip from Marrakech worth it?
If you have a few days in Marrakech and want to see the coast without changing hotels, yes. You leave the noise of the city for a sea breeze, a walkable medina and a beach, and you are back the same evening. If you want to surf or stay for the sunset over the ocean, plan a night in Essaouira instead: the route can be adjusted, see Excursion Customization below.
